Detox has had a bit of a bashing over the years, mainly due to people selling ‘detox’ products that do very little. And while it’s true that there’s no product you can take that miraculously releases all of the nasties in your body, detoxing is still an incredibly healthy and worthwhile process. When it’s done right that is! The important thing to remember is that the body can detox pretty well by itself, but there are things you can do to give it a helping hand. If you’ve overindulged recently or are just looking to feel lighter and cleaner, here are a few of the benefits of detoxing.
Detoxing Can Replenish Your Body and ‘Reset’ Your Appetite
You don’t need to drink special detox teas or use unique products. You can detox your body simply by eating healthily and eliminating harmful chemicals. This includes cutting out the things that we know are bad for us. A good way to go about a detox plan is to start by eating just fruits and vegetables for a couple of days. You can juice them, blend them into smoothies or simply eat them as they are. These foods are easy to digest and provide your body with a massive boost of vitamins and nutrients. If you’ve not been eating particularly well recently, it will more than likely offer you a whole host of things that you currently lack in.
Eating fruits and vegetables for a couple of days can also help to ‘reset’ your appetite if you feel as though you’ve been eating too much recently as your stomach will shrink. Over a few more days you can gradually add some lean protein and whole grains back into your diet. Detoxing in this way can kick-start a longer term healthy eating plan too and set you off on a good foot. Aim to eat a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, organic where possible. And work on refueling your body with everything it needs.
Detoxing Breaks Food Addictions
We can be addicted to things in our diets without even realizing- refined carbs, sugar, caffeine and saturated fat to name a few. So removing them breaks the addiction, leaving you feeling much better afterward. When it comes to things like sugar, the more of it that you eat, the more you want. Do you find yourself saying things like ‘I need my daily chocolate fix’ or ‘I’m a chocoholic’!? You’re just addicted to the sugar, and your body is sending you cravings, so you’ll eat more and get the same ‘high.’
The same goes for if you can’t get started in the morning without a cup of coffee, or find yourself reaching for one midday to get you out of a slump. While these things can be difficult to get rid of initially, once you’ve broken the addiction you’ll find that your body can get by just fine without them! Detoxing allows you to quickly remove these chemicals from your body, essentially giving you a clean slate. These harmful chemicals can cause inflammation which can wreak all kinds of havoc on your body. Cutting them out allows your system to recover and heal so that it can work to its full potential.
Detoxing Allows Our Bodies To Run More Efficiently
Our bodies are generally between fifty and sixty-five percent water. When these levels drop, it can have all kinds of adverse effects on the body. Fatigue, dizziness, headaches, digestive issues and more. Drinking water helps to rehydrate your system and promote the body’s ability to remove waste. It does this by aiding digestion and important waste filtering organs such as the liver and kidneys. Water also helps to metabolize fat, which is useful if you’re looking to shed some excess weight. Eating a diet that’s high in fruits and vegetables will contribute to hydrate the body due to the high water content. But ensuring you’re drinking enough throughout the day will aid your detox, and make your body run much more efficiently.
Detox Improves The Skin
As well as eliminating harmful and unwanted chemicals through digestion, your body can also remove them through the skin by sweating. A sauna or steam room at a gym will allow you to do this, although they can be expensive to keep using in the long run. One option would be to find a portable infrared sauna for sale so you can use it at home on a regular basis. Saunas and steam rooms are also good for improving circulation, which again helps to eliminate waste products in the body more quickly.
Detox Helps To Remove Waste Products From The Body
Exercise is an important part of a detox plan. It gets the cardiovascular system going, which improves circulation. In turn, this improves lymph drainage, which is the system that carries waste away from the tissues. Exercise also promotes digestion which again helps to cleanse the body. Exercise will effectively ‘rev up’ all of the bodies organs, meaning they work more efficiently. If you have harmful toxins in your body such as alcohol and caffeine, exercise will help the body to remove these more quickly. Just make sure you’re drinking plenty of water to replace whatever you’re losing. Keep exercise light for the first few days if you’re juicing or just eating fruits and vegetables. If you do too much, you might end up feeling dizzy or light headed.
Detox Improves Mood and Wellbeing
Taking steps to look after your body, and knowing that you are doing it some good can make you feel extremely positive. Plus once you’ve broken any food addictions, you’ll finally be off the roller coaster of cravings and highs that are associated with them. And when your body is fully replenished, nourished and hydrated you’ll have more energy and will feel better in every way! So as well as being great for your physical health, you’ll reap the rewards with your mood and mental health too.
