Hey, lovelies, with the new year many people have been on the mission to eat healthier, and if you’re one that hasn’t given up yet. You deserve an award and congrats! With so many people wanting to eat healthier, I thought I’d share some of my favorite healthy snacks because let’s be honest. When you first start out on your healthy eating journey… you don’t know what all you can eat that’s healthy, and not just labeled “healthy”.
I’m a strong believer that if you want to see results, those results will only come from the kitchen. Because the gym is roughly 30% of the solution, and the food is 70%. Hence the saying “abs are made in the kitchen,” because it’s true. Now contrary to what magazines and even grocery stores want you to believe. Eating healthy doesn’t mean eating like a bird. Contrary to the new “it” diet, you can eat delicious, healthy food. There are options for everyone out there, I mean I can’t have anything containing milk, and I somehow figure it out.
My Favorite Healthy Snacks
Now before you judge, steamed broccoli is one of those things that you can dress up. You can eat it plain, with some butter, bacon bits, ranch dressing, cheese, and the list could go on. One of those things that you can add whatever floats your boat.
Plus it’s an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin C, chromium, and folate. It’s a good source of dietary fiber, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin E, manganese, phosphorus, choline, vitamin B1, vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids), potassium, and copper.
Yes, I’ve jumped on the bandwagon for quinoa. However, a new favorite of mine – I say new, but I’ve been obsessing over these chips for about three months now – is quinoa chips. I know they’re available at Sam’s Club, but you can also order them directly from the company Hi I’m Skinny. I’ve only had the sweet onion flavor, but they also come in sea salt. They also have a sweet potato one and a vegetable one as well.
So if you’re looking for a healthy alternative to regular old potato chips, but don’t want to sacrifice flavor, highly recommend these.
Mango with Chili Powder:
This comes from being of Mexican descent because they have a slight obsession with putting chili powder and mango together.
My favorite candy growing up was the Vero Mango lollipop/sucker, which is just a mango sucker covered in chili powder. If you’ve never had one that probably sounds like a terrible candy to give kids, but if you’ve had them you know what I’m talking about. They’re the best thing in the world.
If you’re wondering, yes I was that kid who didn’t have a candy bar in their lunch at school, but instead had a Vero Mango sucker or any other candy that we got from the local supermercado… and I wonder why the other kids bullied me.
Naturally, I took my obsession with the candy to the next level, and just dice up a regular mango, sprinkle some chili powder on it, and shake it up in a container. Which is THE perfect snack for when the weather starts getting warmer.
I’m a huge fan of fruit salads because just like the whole broccoli thing, you can change them up, and put whatever you want in them. My favorite mix of fruits for a typical fruit salad is:
- Red grapes
It’s a great way to get some vitamins and minerals, dietary fiber, and some liquids to help stay hydrated. Plus those are just some of the things you can put in a fruit salad. Become a scientist in the kitchen and experiment with putting different fruits together, and see what you like and don’t like.
Growing up there was always trail mix around. Meaning from a young age, I would sit with the container and pick out all of the M&M’s, and leave the rest for my parents. As I’ve gotten older, though, and learning I have a dairy intolerance, I’ve quit eating the M&M’s out, and make my trail mix.
Because I’m a very simple person, I keep my trail mix very simple… kind of. My trail mix usually consists of:
- Dried cranberries
- Banana chips
That may not seem simple, but compared to most trail mixes, that’s simple… and most importantly delicious.
Want More Options:
I’ve recently become obsessed with browsing through Nuts.com massive selection of healthy snacks. They have a huge selection of pretty much anything you could think, and they even have a huge selection of gluten-free options that aren’t just bird seed, which I’m excited about. I haven’t ordered anything from them yet, but they have fantastic prices on all of their items, and I’m working on compiling a list of things to order. So excuse me while I order, and then eat all of the food.
Plus my lovely friends at Nuts.com sent me this infographic for you lovelies of a quick reference guide to help you with those cravings.
